On September 2nd my second blood test confirmed that was was indeed pregnant and would be getting referred upstairs to Women's Health. As soon as we knew for sure, we sent off reveal gifts to our parents! I packed them so hastily I forget to get pictures!
My parents received a copy of our reveal photo in a cute, yellow frame and a silly card asking them please not to share the news just yet. My in-laws received more of a gag gift (for losing a bet within the family) as well as a silly card asking they also not spread the news. It was a neon colored car tag that said something like "it's grandma time" to go on the front of his mom's hot rod. Needless to say, everyone was very excited! So excited indeed that my parents came up for a visit the next weekend baring a crib, changing table and a few baby gifts!
At 7 weeks pregnant I had my first prenatal visit. Really it was more like a meeting with a nurse where I answered tons of medical questions, signed some papers and gave them lots of my blood. At 9 weeks 3 days we went to the local elective ultrasound studio for a 2d ultrasound heartbeat package. In the waiting room we picked out a cute, plush hippo into which a recording of our baby's heartbeat would go. Soon we were called back! The technician began to run the wand across my lower abdomen. She was pushing rather hard and seeming to struggle a bit. Finally, we were able to see our little nugget. When she went to find the heartbeat she tried and tried many times and was only able to get it to register once. I was totally freaking out. The tech seemed concerned that I couldn't possibly be as far along as I thought. They offered for us to come back in two weeks and try again for some good pictures and the recording of the heartbeat. We left with a single photo of the single time the heartbeat registered. While my husband was 100% unphased, I was in tears clutching the little plush hippo.
At 11weeks 5 days, we returned to the ultrasound studio for what was an absolutely amazing appointment! You could clearly see baby's whole body- arms, legs, spine, head, and nose! It was amazing to see him kicking around in there and hear his strong heartbeat. One of the photos was even so cute the studio posted it to their facebook page! I was officially relieved of all my fears and beyond excited to share our news with the world!
On my husband's birthday, just one day before the 12 week mark, we shared our news with all of our friends and family. Well.... I did share my secret early with the Alumnae chapter of my sorority at 11w 3d. I made a candle knowing we wouldn't be able to pass it, but to add to my other candles. If you aren't sure what I mean, I'll explain. In my sorority, it is tradition to have a candle passing for "big events" in your life. I was lucky enough to have two while I was active in chapter. One when my now husband lavaliered me (symbolically sharing his fraternity's letters with me as the next step in our relationship before getting engaged). Then again when we got engaged. Each time one of these events happened I told about 3 of my other sisters and they got together to make a candle which would be passed around in a circle of my sisters while we sang waiting to see who blew out the flame and why. This meant, I had to keep these things a secret until I revealed them at my candle pass!
At exactly 12 weeks, I had my first real prenatal visit where I actually saw a midwife and they made an attempt to locate baby's heartbeat. When trying to find it with the doppler failed, they brought in a portable ultrasound machine and were able to locate it much easier. After the exam, she informed me I had a retroverted uterus and that was likely why baby's heartbeat was so hard to find,
During this first trimester I experienced plenty of symptoms- little nausea (no puking!!!), scent aversions to raw beef, garlic, cat urine, and my husbands farts lol, lots and lots of fatigue, round ligament pains (those things are BRUTAL), very sore boobs, and LOTS of acne (yuck!).
➸Keep an eye out this week for the next post in my pregnancy series!
